Work begins on extending Bristol’s m1 metrobus route

Construction has started on the planned extension of Bristol’s m1 metrobus route, marking a significant change to one of the city’s busiest public transport corridors. The project, which began in January and is expected to finish by autumn 2026, will see the m1 link extended from its current terminus at Hengrove Park to Imperial Retail Park, adding new and upgraded stops along Hawkfield Road.

The works form part of a broader strategy to improve bus travel across Bristol, with additional infrastructure to support safer walking, wheeling and cycling alongside the route. Traffic-calming measures, zebra crossings and a segregated cycle path are planned to create a more accessible environment for all road users.

Local councillors and transport leaders highlight that the m1 service is relied upon by tens of thousands of residents weekly, connecting communities from north to south Bristol. By expanding the route, planners aim to provide a faster, more reliable public transport link and encourage more sustainable travel choices.

The project has been shaped by extensive consultation with residents, with feedback influencing details such as crossing locations and cycleway design. Funding comes from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

While some journey disruption can be expected as works progress, transport officials say the long-term benefits will include improved connectivity to key destinations and a boost to Bristol’s broader efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure.
