Man charged with murder after fatal stabbing in Southmead

A man has been charged with murder after a fatal stabbing in Southmead at the weekend.

Officers were called to Greystoke Avenue at around 7.45pm on Saturday following reports of a disturbance. A man in his 40s was found with stab injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that 34-year-old Jake Williams, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder. He appeared before Bristol Magistrates’ Court this morning and was remanded in custody. His case will next be heard at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday.

The force said a cordon remained in place on Greystoke Avenue throughout Sunday while forensic examination work was carried out. Residents reported a significant police presence in the area over the weekend.

Officers have not released the name of the victim, though the family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the coming days.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark Newbury said the investigation remained in its early stages. Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses who were in the area on Saturday evening, particularly anyone with doorbell or dashcam footage from Greystoke Avenue or surrounding streets between 7pm and 8.30pm.

Southmead has seen increased police patrols following the incident, according to a spokesperson for the force. Neighbourhood officers have been carrying out reassurance visits and speaking to local residents about any concerns.
